Kegel Exercises: The Natural Hemorrhoid Cure No One Tells You About

Kegel exercises are a very effective natural hemorrhoid cure that you can do anywhere, any time, and as often as you like. Kegel exercises prevent hemorrhoids by increasing the flow of blood to your anal muscles.

They were invented in the 1940s by Dr. Arnold Kegel, a gynecologist, to strengthen pelvic muscles used during urination. The exercises also

Practice kegel exercises while sitting on the toilet, lying down, or having a conversation over coffee in Starbucks. Another plus: both men and women can benefit from doing them.

How to Use Kegel Exercises as a Natural Hemorrhoid Cure

First, you must locate your PC, or pubococcygeal, muscle. This is a hammock-shaped muscle that runs from your pubic bone to your tailbone (also called the coccyx). Kegel exercises strengthen the PC muscle. Identifying this muscle is not difficult. When you urinate, try to stop the flow of urine midstream. The muscle that moves when you do this is the PC muscle.

Can't stop the flow? This is one indication that the muscle is weak. Kegel exercises will help firm it again. Here's what you should do to locate your PC muscle:

Now that you know where it is, you're ready. Practicing your Kegel exercises is as simple as contracting this same muscle for about 10 seconds. This is about as long as it takes you to say, "1 second, 2 seconds, . . . , 10 seconds" slowly and clearly. Then, release. Relax for about 10-25 seconds (yes, count it out to yourself), and then repeat.

It's very important that you relax in between contractions so that you do not strain the PC muscle. You also don't want to overtax other muscles, such as your abdominals, when doing Kegels. So relax, don't be in a hurry, and breathe normally as you do your exercises.

Do these repetitions about 15 times. Build up your routine gradually until you can repeat these repetitions at least 3 to 4 times throughout the day. Shoot for about 150 squeezes daily to keep your PC muscle at peak strength. Increasing good blood circulation in this area is key to preventing hemorrhoids. This can also stop the growth of existing internal hemorrhoids.

If you already have hemorrhoids and are experiencing a flare-up, 15 repetitions may be too strenuous. Instead, contract the muscle for about 3 seconds ("1 second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds"), and then release it for 25 seconds. Start with 5 repetitions. Try to do them throughout the day. Gradually, build your way up to the 15 sets of repetitions.

As your PC muscle grows stronger, challenge yourself to keep getting stronger. Continue to up the number of repetitions, but remember to relax in between squeezes.

If the muscle becomes sore during these practices, give yourself a break from them for a day or two. Over time, in as little as a month for some, this muscle will grow strong.
